James Baldwin was an American
essayist, novelist, and playwright whose eloquence and passion on the subject
of race in America made him one of the 20th century’s greatest
writers. Baldwin broke new literary ground exploring racial and social issues
through his works. He is especially known for his eloquent, thoughtful, and passionate essays on the Black
experience in America.
Through four alternating weeks, we’ll
explore some of Baldwin’s writings, culminating with a showing of the documentary film, I am not your Negro, which is based on a
final unfinished Baldwin manuscript.
